SEVEN MEDALS FOR KICKBOXING CLUB

The members of Athlone's Westside Kickboxing Club won seven medals in the All-Ireland Kickboxing Championships in Meath last weekend.

Three gold medals and four silvers were won by the Athlone contingent, and the haul of medals at a major national tournament represents a phenomenal achievement by the Athlone club considering its only been in existence for five months. As well as taking seven medals, Lithunian-born Athlone resident Simas Skatikas also captured the tournament's Best Fighter Award.

Westside Kickboxing Club coach and founder, Aaron McGrath, who is assisted by Athlone native Anthony Rodden, said the club's performance at last weekend's championships was "fantastic".

"We have only been in operation five months but already have 35 members. Our members range from 15 years of age to adult, and we also have a women's-only class. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact all these fighters were beginners a few months ago. They've been exceptional since taking up the sport, and to bring home seven medals, plus the Best Fighter Award, is fantastic," said Aaron.
